Does society follow the Ten Commandments?

We all know of the Ten Commandments, but few of us actually know what they are. If you ask someone to name them, they might know two or three and may be able to guess that many more, but unless you are speaking to someone who is very religious they will not know them all.

As a society, many of our laws are based on these. However it is interesting that no one seems to follow them all. And most all of them are broken, even by the most devout Christians.

1. The first commandment, though we follow it - most of us do not know it. "You shall have no other gods before Me"

2. "You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth." If we were actually people who followed these Biblical Laws, there would be no works of art showing clouds, stars, caves or sea creatures. Yet there are, even at the local churches can such infringements of the 2nd commandment be found; a crucifix for example.

3. "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain." As a kid I was told off for using the Lords name in vain any time I said, "God damn it". But as an adult I have learnt that "in vain" actually means to use his name in an improper or irreverent manner; eg "God you look good".

4. "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." If the Sabbath day is to be kept Holy, why does the Church remember Sunday and not the Sabbath (Saturday)? And many Christians even work themselves on Saturday. Naughty-Naughty...

5. "Honour your father and your mother". I still honour my parents, but there are often stories in the newspaper of child/parent suits, arguments and murders.

6. "You shall not murder" Thankfully society has agreed to keep this one. But then again, there are some countries, provinces and states which legally allow the murder (or killing) of people in gas chambers, electric chairs and lethal injection.

7. "You shall not commit adultery" Adultery is defined as: Lewdness or unchastity of thought as well as act, as forbidden by the seventh commandment. As such, if someone "thinks" about intimacy with someone other than their lawful spouse - they are committing adultery. No more sexy calendars and magazines, or anything else for that matter.

8. "You shall not steal" Stealing is defined as: to take (the property of another or others) without permission or right, esp. secretly or by force. I guess taxes would fall into this category.

9. "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour". If this were actually adhered to, there would be no reason for gossip, rumour and water-coolers.

10. "You shall not covet your neighbour's house; you shall not covet your neighbour's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbour's." To covet is to desire. Everyone keeps up with the Joneses and desires what their neighbour has. Sorry, but Consumerism is sinful... we need to STOP buying stuff and send our economy broke!

~~~~ I acknowledge that a lot of the above has been take out of context from the original intent of the Commandments. They do provide a solid basis for moral and ethical standing within our society, but you have to agree... we do (technically speaking) break them on a regular basis.
That's so good to be refresh by these laws--but however, one should follow it by heart and not by mere mouth... Good post!
I certainly wasn't sure of the first commandment. This is a good analysis of society through religion, and very interesting at that
The 2nd commandmend,is what you said, but also says shall not bow down to them,people use to sun worship,and moon worship..And Yes if you Have the Holy Spirt you can keep the 10 commandments,and we should follow the feast in the Bible,I mean if people can celebrate christmas and easter man made holidays,and thats not even in scripture,those are pagan holidays,but I have asked someone once before if they celebrate easter and christmas,I never got an answer so I am assuming they do...?I walk in the Spirt not the flesh,YahShua guides me and I follow...
So let me ask you this,say everyone broke the 10 commandments does that mean we are saved by grace and grace alone,so I can go worship other gods,and murder,but I am saved,because YahShua died for my sins rather our sins? So that must mean that we can worship on Sunday,and not Saturday,well Yahweh hollowed out that day from the beginning even before the Jews or even before YahShua..So we can do the man made scriptures and be forgiven and celerbrate..And also it says REMEMBER to keep the Sabbath day Holy in the NT,the 7th day,(I worship Him everyday though) (the Sabbath though Sat,I do not work)is that sunday or anyday that we pick,when we make time for ourselfs to make time for Yahweh,Hes really gotta think we are cool to give Him that much of our life threw His loving grace,Yahweh Himself calls the first of six "working" days. (Ezekiel 46:1)Remember the Sabbath [seventh] day, to keep it set-apart......Exodus 20: 8 The New Testament is totally silent with regard to any change for keeping of the seventh-day Sabbath, and it says nothing about observing the first day as a replacement for Yahweh's seventh-day Sabbath
..No do not mock Yahweh,and do not take Him lightly,time is close..The Sabbath day is blessed by Yahweh and it is Every Friday sundown to Saturday sundown..But you and everyone can do as you please,but as for me I listen to My God,and that Is Yahweh the maker of Heaven and Earth...
In YahShuas name
